The Massacre of Mice

Recyclart, November 2010
—
Jornal de Artigos Não Lidos (Journal of Unread Articles) is a journal by Repórter sem Beiras that wants to communicate a broader view and sense of personal identity on the people living in favelas — Brazilian slums.
This issue, The Massacre of Mice, focuses on the theme of 'wrecks'. A wreck is a building, structure or object reduced to a state of ruin; the remains of a previous existence; something destroyed. A change, a crisis or a collision that triggers the ‘off’ button. What often remains is an empty shell devoid of meaning, function and interest. A phone with leaked batteries, the white cloak of a ghost, a person who is depressed, a snail house without the snail, a milk bottle that’s been broken. A wreck is also a testimony to a previous life or existence, and, as such, a source of endless stories and mysteries. Shipwrecks are graves for travellers who never reach their destinations. Graves are markers to remember the dead — their lives and stories. Stories are never lost.
