What do people in Brussels really know about life in the favelas? And what do favela dwellers in Rio know about how people live in Brussels? The project 'Hello Rio, Bye-Bye Brussels' aims to communicate the intimate, everyday, per-sonal lives of fourteen different people. A group of seven people was selected in 'de Marollen', a popular neighborhood in Brussels. Each person exchanged visual letters with his or her respective partner in Fogueteira, a favela in the south zone of Rio de Janeiro. The visual letters — consisting of photos and occasionally a few short sentences — were sent by e-mail via postmen Annelies in Rio and Vincen Beeckman in Brussels. The series resulted in a visual dialogue about daily life in both places. In Rio, the project was part of a workshop on photography given by Annelies to the young-sters of the Fogueteira favela.
